Each year we’re tempted to call it the most extravagant, the most in depth look at just one side of fashion, but this year it’s at least the most personal, and by far the most haunting. The exhibition starts with pieces from McQueen’s graduate collection from Central St. Martin’s—the same one Isabella Blow bought in full—which will familiarize even the least fashion savvy viewer with McQueen’s signature shapes.
What follows is a maze of rooms constructed around McQueen’s most famous collections, each one peppered with quotes and explanations from the designer as if he’s narrating his life just for you. It starts with his work from Givenchy set against gilded mirrors (“I want people to be afraid of the women I dress.”). A glass case holds select looks from his posthumous collection and a wooden room lit with gold sconces displays his infamous Highland Rape collection (“People were so unintelligent they thought this was about women being raped—yet Highland Rape was about England’s rape of Scotland.”)
Though screens in the accessories room offer a look at the extravagant shows McQueen was famous for, it’s the realization of the Kate Moss hologram that will make you feel just a drop of the magic that went into a McQueen production.
We’ll let the rest be surprising, but click through for a few of our favorite shots!
